Protect Medicaid, Protect Recovery.

Last week Congress enacted the sweeping “Big Beautiful” domestic spending bill, and tucked inside is a deep reduction in federal Medicaid funding that threatens Virginia’s progress against the overdose crisis.

SAARA of Virginia is gravely concerned.

Medicaid is the main payer for detox programs, counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and peer-recovery services; when those dollars shrink, waitlists lengthen and treatment doors close—especially in rural communities where small hospitals already operate on the brink, and individuals in crisis are forced to go without care. New reporting and work-requirement rules further burden people struggling with addiction, risking coverage lapses at the very moment stability is most fragile. We urge state leaders to hold the line on Medicaid eligibility and benefits, invest in the peer-recovery workforce, and protect rural health centers so every Virginian can access life-saving care.

Recovery is not a partisan issue; it is a public-health imperative. SAARA will continue educating policymakers, partnering with providers, and advocating for solutions that keep hope and treatment within reach across the Commonwealth.
