The Jenkins Foundation awards SAARA of Virginia a $20,000 grant to support it’s Young People in Recovery program.

Richmond, Virginia – SAARA of Virginia is pleased to announce that we have received a grant from The Jenkins Foundation for $20,000 to support our Young People in Recovery Program. The Jenkins Foundation is one of six supporting foundations at the Community Foundation. Created from the sale of Retreat Hospital, the foundation is led today by a dedicated group of women committed to improving our community's health and wellness.

"This investment by The Jenkins Foundation will allow us to expand Addiction Recovery Supports and Education in the Richmond Metro area for young people, particularly the 18 to 24-year-old range, which has historically been disproportionately affected by the substance use epidemic. Drug overdoses are now the number-one cause of accidental death in the U.S. with more than six in 10 deaths of young adults involving an opioid.," said Victor McKenzie Jr, executive director of SAARA

of Virginia. "This terrible trend is moving to Virginia."

The Young People in Recovery program uses a strengths perspective model, which focuses on the strengths of individuals and the enhancement of services. Participants develop confidence and resources to embark on their recovery journey through the All-Recovery meetings, pro-social events, workshops, and advocacy events. Participants learn how to focus on their assets and create dialogue about their challenges and successes. The YPR All-Recovery meetings create a safe space for individuals to speak with others about challenges, allowing participants to receive and offer feedback and support one another. When the strengths of every individual are addressed, it gives that person the ability to use these attributes and use them in their journey of recovery.
