PRS Training Application

Congratulations on taking the first step in the process of becoming a Peer Recovery Specialist. Thank you for your interest in the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) Office of Recovery Services (ORS) 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training. This training includes 60 hours of contact time and 12 hours of outside homework, as well as quizzes and a final test. Upon successful completion of the training, we hope that you will continue your journey and seek certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist. The DBHDS 72-hour PRS training is the only training accepted by the Virginia Certification Board as part of the certification process.

This application must be completed in order to be considered for admission to a class. Once your application is reviewed and if you are accepted, you will be notified of your acceptance. If you have any questions about this form or the application process, please contact Anika Richburg at

  4. Save the application to save your answers

***To consider before applying***

Check this list of barrier crimes that will disqualify you from obtaining a PRS job even upon completion of the PRS course. This is an unfortunate reality that the recovery community lives in. SAARA is currently working with legislators to reduce the impact of barrier crimes in the recovery community job sector.

Next Steps:

  1. We will review your application between the dates listed above

  2. SAARA will select 14 people to move forward with their application

  3. You will be notified if your application is selected within 2 weeks of the applications closing

  4. If you are selected you have 72 hours to accept your spot in the class

  5. In order to reserve your spot in the class, you must fill out the registration and pay the $300 class fee

  6. Training materials and the meeting link will be sent to you after registration is completed and the class is paid for
