SAARA, is a community based grassroots membership organization of people in recovery, their families, friends and committed community supporters dedicated to making their voice count so that others may join in the Celebration of Recovery. The meeting is free and open to the public.

SAARA was formed in 1997 by individuals and families in Virginia who know that as bad as drug and alcohol addiction is, people can and do get better. And that when individuals and families get better, communities get better too. SAARA's principle mission is to celebrate, support, and advocate for the prevention of and recovery from substance abuse and alcohol addiction. SAARA will promote social educational, legal, research, and health care resources and services that support effective, accountable and assessable prevention, intervention, and treatment activities. SAARA believes that it is time to move beyond the stigma and crippling attitudes of blame and shame and start investing in programs that have been shown to work.
